Cookie Policy

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Most sites use many. We use almost none.

The cookies we use

Essential. One cookie remembers your cookie choice itself, so we do not ask you on every visit. It is set when you respond to the cookie notice and kept for 12 months. The site cannot function politely without it.

Analytics, only with your consent. If you accept analytics, Google Analytics sets two cookies (_ga and _ga_*, which persist in your browser for up to 24 months). They hold a random identifier that recognises your browser when you return, so we can understand in aggregate how the site is read: which pages, from which countries, on which devices, by new or returning readers. The identifier is never linked to your name or email address, we do not enable Google’s advertising features, and it does not track you on other websites. The measurement data itself is retained for 14 months, then deleted. We use this to decide what to improve and what to write next. It is never connected to your email address.

If you decline, no analytics cookies are set and nothing is measured. The site works identically either way.

Marketing, only with your consent. If you accept marketing cookies, the Meta (Facebook) pixel and the TikTok pixel load, each setting one cookie (_fbp for Meta, _ttp for TikTok). They let us measure how our advertising performs, for example whether a visit or a waitlist signup followed from an advert, so we can understand and improve our campaigns on Meta and TikTok. If you decline, neither pixel loads and no marketing cookie is set.

With that same consent, our own server also reports a waitlist signup to Meta and to TikTok, rather than leaving the report to your browser alone. Ad blockers and browser privacy settings frequently stop the browser’s report from arriving, which would leave our advertising judged on partial information. Each server report carries a scrambled form of your email address, produced by a one-way process that Meta and TikTok cannot reverse, never the address itself. For each provider, the browser report and the server report share a single identifier, so it recognizes them as one signup and counts it once. If you decline marketing cookies, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, no report is sent to either, and your signup is simply recorded on our list as before.

What we do not use

No fingerprinting. We do not sell your personal information. Other than Google Analytics and the Meta and TikTok advertising measurement described above, all optional and off until you allow them, the site sets no trackers. If a cookie is ever added, this page changes before it does, and the choice stays with you.

Changing your mind

You can revisit your choice at any time through the “Cookie preferences” link in the footer. You can also clear or block cookies in your browser settings, or install Google’s opt-out browser add-on if you prefer to opt out of Google Analytics everywhere.
